How Roof Warranties Are Instantly Voided

Most homeowners think their new roof comes with a “lifetime warranty.” wich we’ve talked about what lifetime really means in other videos, But here’s the sad thing, the vast majority of those warranties are instantly voided the day your roof is installed
The first reason — poor ventilation. Every roofing manufacturer has strict ventilation requirements. If your attic isn’t vented properly — with the right balance of intake and exhaust — heat and moisture build up under your shingles.
That trapped heat cooks the roof from underneath, causes shingles to curl, and ruins the fiberglass mat. When that happens, the manufacturer says, “Sorry, that’s not a product failure — that’s improper installation.” Translation: your warranty is gone. Trust me, we see this literally every single day on brand new roof builds, its literally crazy how often this happens.
The second reason — installer error. Even a top-tier shingle won’t save you if the crew cuts corners.
Over-driven nails, missing starter strips, bad flashing, or skipped ice barrier — any of those mistakes void coverage immediately. And most homeowners never know it happened… until they file a claim and get denied.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: Manufacturer warranties don’t protect you from poor workmanship — they only protect the shingle itself if it was installed to spec.
If your roofer doesn’t follow those specs exactly, the manufacturer isn’t liable — you are and as you’ve seen in our contract review video, these roofing contractors give themselves plenty of outs on that contract to cover their tail on these workmanship errors.
That’s why at My Family Roofer, every roof we install is built to the manufacturer’s system specs — from ventilation to fasteners. And we back it with both the extended material warranty as well as a manufacturer backed 10-year workmanship warranty.
So you’re covered on both fronts — no finger-pointing, no loopholes.
The bottom line: a “lifetime warranty” means nothing if it’s not installed right. The right roofer is what makes the warranty real.
